      In order to implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important reply letter, on October 13, 2024, Beijing Jiaotong University successfully held a seminar on the theme of "Coordinated Development of Urban and Transportation in Developing Countries: Opportunities and Talent Training Needs" in the Science Hall. The main task of this seminar is to study and discuss how to cultivate high-level, compound and applied planning talents with global vision and ability to solve complex problems for developing countries under the framework of global development initiatives such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 21. Experts from Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Ministry of Transport of Malaysia, China Urban Planning and Design Institute, China Urban Rail Transit Association, etc. were invited to give keynote reports on urbanization trends and challenges in developing countries, and experts from Raman University, Planning Institute of Ministry of Transport, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, etc. were invited to hold a round-table dialogue on the needs of international talent training in urban and rural planning. Experts and scholars from China's urban planning, urban rail transit, infrastructure investment and other fields, students from the Malaysian Urban Planning and Public Transport Seminar of the Ministry of Commerce, and more than 100 representatives of international students from the English master's program majoring in urban and rural planning and traffic engineering of our school attended the event.

      Dean Han Bing of School of Architecture and Art of Beijing Jiaotong University delivered a welcome speech and warmly welcomed the guests. Wang Kai, president of China Urban Planning and Design Institute and national engineering survey and design master, shared China's urbanization process and transportation development, China's urban and transportation integration planning practice, and the cultivation of compound talents in urban and transportation planning, and introduced China's urban and rural planning experience in rapid urbanization in the past 30 years. Zhang Yugang, Special Affairs Officer of Malaysia's Ministry of Transport, analyzed the future challenges faced by Malaysia's urban planning, and pointed out the importance of emphasizing people-oriented, community participation and sustainable development in future planning. Dr. Xiao Yuan, senior city expert of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, introduced the vision, mission, operation mode and cooperation direction of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in developing countries. Han Baoming, deputy director of the Expert Academic Committee of China Urban Rail Transit Association and professor of Beijing Jiaotong University, elaborated on the development process of China's urban rail transit TOD practice and the existing cooperation between China and Malaysia in the field of urban rail.

      The round-table discussion session was chaired by Zhang Chun, a professor in the Department of Urban and Rural Planning of Beijing Jiaotong University. First of all, She Gaohong, Vice President of the School of Architecture and Art, was invited to give an introductory speech on the training of international talents in urban and rural planning. Subsequently, seven guests, including former Dean Yang Wenyin from the Planning Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport, Director Li Zhijun of the Department of Mass Communication, School of Creative Industry, Raman University, Malaysia, Professor Shen Tiyan of Peking University School of Government Administration, Vice President Yin Chengzhi of Tsinghua University School of Public Administration, Director Zhang Lei of Urban Planning and Management Department of Renmin University of China, Vice President Liu Xiaofang of International Education School of Beijing Jiaotong University, and Professor Xia Haishan, Director of Academic Committee of School of Architecture and Art. Officials from the Malaysian Urban Planning and Public Transport Seminar, officials from the Master of Urban and Rural Planning Program of the Ministry of Commerce and representatives of international students from Beijing Jiaotong University had interactive exchanges on the spot.

      This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia. The successful holding of this forum not only provides a platform for academic exchanges for participants, but also contributes wisdom and strength to promoting the coordinated development of cities and transportation in developing countries. In the future, Beijing Jiaotong University will continue to uphold the spirit of open cooperation, strengthen exchanges and cooperation with related fields at home and abroad, and jointly promote the sustainable development of global cities.
